Q&A
What experience have you had in your career that led you to found Bitbloom?
I have spent most of my career building software for engineering experts. I am a strong believer in the potential of highly skilled humans when combined with digital technologies. After spending some great years working with an amazing team building some of the most highly regarded software available in renewable energy, I became frustrated at the pace of delivery and the mismatch between the capabilities promised by modern technologies and the tool stacks used by most experts in the industry (frequently dominated by excel!). These experts are working to deliver a brighter future and it became my mission to build them the best digital tools possible. It is this desire that led me to co-found Bitbloom with Philip and Staffan.
Why does the world need Bitbloom?
At its core, Bitbloom has a strong belief in the power of people to change the world. We are committed to providing teams with the very best tools for renewable energy analysis. We believe that experts should be set free from the complexity of bespoke solutions and straightjacketing of black-box analytics. This sets us apart. Instead, we provide the highest quality software and solutions and empower you to do more with data.
What’s a fact about yourself that people might find surprising?
I love gardening – I am very fortunate to have a small garden that I have been working on for the last 5 years since moving away from the city, and have planted trees, shrubs, flowers, and hedges. Last year my family and I were very excited that a hedgehog took up residence beneath some of the grasses we had planted, and we are constantly amazed at the numbers of birds, bees, butterflies, and other creatures we see. Gardening is a lot like software development – you have to try a lot of experiments and some will fail, and you need to keep on top of maintenance, but with the right discipline you will soon be amazed at what you can achieve.
What is Bitbloom planning that has you excited?
We have just expanded our development team and without bragging too much, I am absolutely bowled over by the quality of our people. I am very excited to see what they achieve this year – they are already delivering cool new features to our existing products. We will also be expanding our product line this year with additional offerings that make it easier than ever to understand performance and condition issues affecting wind portfolios. What has me most excited though is continuing to build on the tools we have available for experts – we have some very nifty developments in machine learning-assisted analytics coming down the line, so stay tuned!
What impact will digital technology have on wind farm operations in the future?
The futurologist Ray Amara stated that “people tend to overestimate the short-term impact of new technologies while underestimating their long-term effects”. The AI revolution has not fully come for renewables yet in the way that many expect. If I look into my crystal ball, in 25 to 30 years’ time I believe that we will be in a world of almost fully automated renewable operations, maintenance and performance optimisation. But we have a lot of hard work to do before then, and Bitbloom’s task is to build the tools that help us not only utilise these new technologies but also slowly build trust in them. Humans will not be out of work for some time yet. While they have a crucial role to play, we can help renewable operations teams be more effective, productive, and valuable than ever before, and together create a bright future that we can be proud of.
